Tumblr is a microblogging platform and social network where users can share short-form content, including text posts, links, photos, videos, and audio. Tumblr also has a reblog function that makes it easy for users to share content with their own followers.
While Tumblr is one of the most used blogging platforms in the world, it’s not the best at everything. Because there are a few limitations that prevent Tumblr from being the best blogging platform.
When using Tumblr, you may not realize there are limitations that you actually follow or are forced to follow. Some of these limitations are discussed in the User Agreement, but other limitations may be hidden until you experience them firsthand.
From Tumblr post limit to GIF size limit, here are 8 Tumblr limitations that may surprise you.
250 Posts Per Day

On Tumblr, the total number of posts per day is limited to 250. If you have more than this number, they will be held in a queue and posted the following day. This limit ensures that large blogs don’t spam thousands of followers at once.
If you have a lot of content to share in a short period of time, it’s best to spread it out over several days or use the queue feature to spread out your posts.
However, even the queuing has its own limit that will make the queue be held on certain posts. Let’s see them in the next section
If you need help keeping track of your Tumblr blog’s post limit, you can use a tool like Tumblr’s post limit checker to check them.
In this post limit, the following are the media limits
Video – 20 per day
Photos – 150 per day
When will the Tumblr post limit reset?
The Tumblr post limit will be reset at 12 AM ET (Eastern Time).
10 secondary blogs per day

A secondary blog is an additional Tumblr blog that you can create in addition to your primary blog. The secondary blog has a few advantages over the primary blog such as multiple authors, password protection, and more but there are a few limitations too.
You can only create 10 secondary blogs per day. The number of posts that can be created is limited to 150 posts which will be included in the limits of the overall post.
50 Queued Posts Per Day

Similar to the post limit, you can only queue 50 posts per day. However, you can go too far and can queue 300 posts for various days.
If you exceed the given limit while queuing, you will lose those posts. This should be carefully considered while posting because this limit also includes the post limit, which is 250 posts per day.
For example, If you already posted 230 posts in a day and queued 50 posts on the same day, only 20 posts will be published and the leftover posts will be discarded. So make sure to plan carefully.
20 tags can be tracked

A tracked tag is a generic term for any Tumblr tag that is used to track posts with specific content, like fan fiction, meta, or spoilers, and to monitor trends within a specific community. However, there is a limit to the number of tags you can track.
You can only track 20 tags at once and I guess that’s more than enough to stay focused on your passion or interest.
Gif sizes are limited to 2MB
A GIF is a short, animated picture, without sound. GIFs are an excellent way to communicate with your audience. They can convey thoughts, emotions, and reactions in a way that conversation alone cannot.
You might be at sometimes while uploading Gifs experience that the Gif doesn’t move as you expected. It’s because once the size of the Gif limit exceeds 2MB, it will not animate properly. Moreover, It should also not be more than 500 Pixels.
Tip: To find if the gif is working properly, save the posts as a draft and check to see if the gif is animating properly. If not, then you gotta rework and reduce the site to the Tumblr gif limit.
Media Limits

Similar to GIF limits, there are some limitations on the audio and video file that you can upload to Tumblr.
Audio
While uploading an audio file, it should be less than 10 MB in size and must be in MP3 format. No other formats are supported.
Video
The video file you upload should be an MP4 or MOV and shouldn’t exceed 500 MB in size. The maximum length of the video should be 10 minutes. And also the total overall length of the video per day should not exceed 60 minutes.
Furthermore, you can only post 20 videos per day.
Tip: You can easily bypass these limits by hosting the video or audio file on a service like Youtube or Sound Cloud and then pasting the URL of that audio or video onto your Tumblr posts.
Photo
Just like audio and video, photos have limitations while uploading. The recommended dimensions for the photo upload on Tumblr are 500 x 700 pixels with a 10 MB size limit. However, you can upload up to 1280 x 1290 pixels to acquire the maximum clarity of the image when someone clicks it. Other times, the dimensions of more than 500 x 700 will be automatically scaled down to the limit.
The photo format should be in JPG/JPEG, PNG, and BMP.
Additionally, you can only upload 150 posts per day.
10 Questions Per Hour

Asking questions on Tumblr is a great way to shoot your question to someone and get answers from them.
However, you can only ask 10 questions per hour and 5 anonymous questions per hour with a character limit of 500. This is also to prevent spamming.
Do note that the ask feature should be enabled on settings. If enabled, ask as anonymous should be enabled separately.
Your age should be at least 13 years to use Tumblr
You must be at least 13 years old to use Tumblr (16 years for eastern Union countries). However, if you are under the age of 18, there are some limitations on what you can see.
You will not be able to view content that has been flagged as explicit, and you will not be able to view sensitive content in the IOS app if you are under the age of 18 but still can use Tumblr.
Conclusion
Tumblr is an incredible platform, and it has some wonderful features, but I don’t believe that it’s entirely without flaws because there are some limitations such as the daily post limit will set the platform aside from being the best.
To put it simply, there are better platforms for certain things; for example, I would never use Tumblr to host a blog-based business. However, there are still so many worthwhile features on the site: multimedia content, filters, themes, and more.
If blogging is your main passion, you should definitely create a blog using WordPress and that’s far better than Tumblr in terms of features, SEO, Customization, and more.
